Generative AI and student writing: Redesigning writing assignments

How can writing assignments continue to foster meaningful learning processes when students have access to generative AI tools?

As generative AI tools become increasingly available, the conditions under which students write and develop their writing skills are changing.

Instructors face the challenge of designing writing assignments that stimulate learning, deepen disciplinary thinking, and promote independent text production—even when AI tools are readily available and actively used.

This workshop focuses on the practical implementation of AI-sensitive writing assignments in participants' own teaching contexts. Participants will explore writing pedagogy approaches for designing assignments in the age of AI, including strategies for making writing processes visible, using rhetorical framing, and encouraging reflection on AI use as part of the learning process.

Another key focus is instructors' own positioning: How can I communicate transparently to students when and how AI tools may be used in my course—and where I draw boundaries? Throughout the workshop, participants will work directly with their own teaching materials and further develop them. The workshop also provides opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and discussion.
